Experience Serbian culture through food you can make right at home.
Ćevapčići are a Balkan delight. A magnificent food that I recommend everyone try at least once. I once read that they were inspired by a similar sausage dish brought over to the Balkans from the Arabic world. I have no idea if that is true.
I made these wonderful little sausages for the first time with my mother. She came to visit me for 2 weeks after I gave birth to my son, Luka. I had a list of things I wanted to do with her, making homemade ćevapčići was one of them. Of course I’ll share the other Serbian dishes we made in later posts.
We pan fired these bad boys, but traditionally they are cooked on an open fire. So grill ’em up (with charcoal, the only way to grill :)) They are eaten on a flat bread, like a pita pocket, with finely sliced sweet onion, and ajvar. What is ajvar you ask? Well, it is a roasted red pepper spread that I will share in a different post.
Ok. Get to it. Let me know how they come out. Izvoli*!
*Izvoli is a Serbian expression for “there you go, enjoy”. (Or my way of saying it, “Get to it”).
